Last week I started a series all about meal prepping and planning.

If you missed it, you can catch it here.

I decided to write this post because I have people asking what I do, what I use, and what it looks like for us as a family of four.

In a nutshell – it looks different from week to week.

BUT I will tell you I am pretty consistent with my system when I DO do it.

Part one is how I create a plan
Part two (today) is all about the tools I use
Part three is all about the recipes
Part four is a start to finish post for what it all looks like for me.

Why is it important to have the right ‘tools’?

When it comes to planning out your meals, it doesn’t take much in terms of kitchen utensils/ gadgets. However, having the right ones will make your life much easier.

Now, I should start this off with the fact that I have a very minimalistic kitchen. I have a good set of knives, pots and pans, a slow cooker, blender, juicer, kitchen aid mixer, and some good quality storage containers.

That is all I need.

I have never contemplated and instant pot or air fryer. Although I am sure I would love them, I just feel like it is not something I have to have and would rather put my money towards something else.

These are what I love the most

  • Let’s start with the crockpot.  I use my crockpot all the time and it is an old school one that came with my set of pots and pans. It looks like this except not as updated but it gives you the idea. If I were to buy a new one, I would get this one. Crockpots are a HUGE timesaver and worth the investment. I use it often to make beans, soups, and veggie broth.

For a simple recipe on how to make your own beans, check out this video here.

  • Quality containers to hold all your food in is very important. When selecting containers, make sure it has an airtight lid, glass is best, and something that can transport easily. I LOVE these ones from Costco but if you don’t have access to Costco, these ones are fabulous too. Mason jars also work really well!
  • A food processor helps speed things along. While it is not necessary, it helps save time in the kitchen. I make dips/spreads for the week, chop veggies quickly, and if I am up for it, make nut butter for the week.
  • The last things you might want would be a good set of knives, a cutting board, some good music or book on audible, and patience.

Although planning your meals, taking the time to cut and prep ingredients or meals, and doing the whole process can be time-consuming, it is so worth it when it comes to your busy work week!

I tend to be very minimalistic… but don’t fall into the trap of thinking you need every last gadget presented to you within the last few months.
