Guacamole.  Such a simple recipe.  However, I do get a lot of compliments on my guacamole so I thought I’d share what I use to whip it up.  Just a few simple ingredients you most likely have at home and then you’re good to dip and enjoy!  Buying pre-made packets from the store to mix in is just not necessary folks.

The main star of the show: avocados.  I have always loved avocados.  They really are an amazing fruit.

In one serving (half of an avocado) you get:
– 4.6 grams of fiber
– 10 grams of HEALTHY fat
– 0.2 grams total sugar
– 14 milligrams of Vitamin K (19% DV)
– 60 milligrams of folate (15% DV)

They are great for improving heart health (healthy fatty acid composition), helping with your skin, eyes, and hair (Fat soluble vitamins and healthy oils), and may even help prevent cancer thanks to their phytonutrient content.

Next up, add in the purple onion and seasonings and enjoy.  If you like a little heat, feel free to add in some jalapenos.  I am a heat wimp and will always pick around those.   Last thing… I don’t add in lime because I rarely have it on hand and we eat it up so quickly.  The thing doesn’t even have a chance to turn brown.  Feel free to squeeze in half a lime if you feel inclined to do so.

Why not use the packet of seasonings?  Here are typical ingredients found in a packet of seasoning mix for guacamole:  Maltodextrin, Salt, Onion, Nonfat Dry Milk, Modified Tapioca Starch, Red Bell Peppers, Sour Cream Solids (Cream, Nonfat Dry Milk, and Cultures), Garlic, Corn Syrup Solids, Jalapeno Peppers, Cultured Nonfat Dry Milk, Lemon Juice Solids, Parsley, Lactic Acid, Citric Acid, Extractives of Red Pepper, and Natural Flavors.

Maltodextrin: spikes blood sugar, changes gut bacteria that can lead to disease, and may cause allergic reactions.

Milk:  Why do we need milk in our guacamole??

Corn Syrup solids:  Sounds delicious doesn’t it… processed sugar.

Natural Flavors:  it is hard to know what the ‘natural flavors’ are.  They are not regulated and a company can list something as natural but it may not be healthy for our diet.  Check out this article for more on ‘natural flavors’
